Overview

Cosmetic surgery, explained

Cosmetic surgery covers procedures that aim to change or refine appearance, including facial, breast and body procedures. Results vary between patients, and every surgical procedure carries risks. The right option depends on your goals, anatomy, health and expectations, and a good surgeon will tell you when a procedure is not suitable. MedMax helps you organise your information for specialist review. It does not recommend a procedure.

Pathways

Types of cosmetic surgery

The right option depends on your goals, your anatomy, your health and what is realistic for your case.

  • 01

    Facial procedures

Surgery that reshapes or refines the nose, eyelids, face and neck, such as rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and facelift.

  • 02

    Body contouring

Procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck that reshape areas of the body, often after weight change or pregnancy.

  • 03

    Breast aesthetic surgery

Augmentation, lift and reduction, and treatment of gynecomastia in men

  • 04

    Post-weight-loss surgery

Removal of excess skin after significant weight loss, in selected patients.

  • 05

    Non-surgical aesthetics

Treatments such as injectables, laser and peels, usually performed by dermatologists or trained aesthetic physicians.

  • 06

    Reconstructive and scar care

Procedures to improve the appearance or function of scars or injury-related changes, where suitable.

Treatments

Common cosmetic procedures

A surgeon should explain the benefits, limits, risks, alternatives and likely recovery for your case, including what the procedure cannot do.

  1. 01

    Rhinoplasty

Surgery to reshape the nose, for appearance, breathing or both.

  2. 02

    Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)

Removal or repositioning of skin and fat around the eyes.

  3. 03

    Facelift and neck lift

Surgery to tighten skin and underlying tissue in selected patients.

  4. 04

    Liposuction

Removal of localised fat deposits. It is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment.

  5. 05

    Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

Removal of excess skin and tightening of the abdominal wall in selected patients.

  6. 06

    Breast augmentation

Surgery to increase breast size or change shape, usually with implants.

  7. 07

    Breast lift or reduction

Procedures to change breast position or reduce size.

  8. 08

    Gynecomastia surgery

Treatment to reduce enlarged breast tissue in men.

  9. 09

Body lift or arm and thigh lift

Removal of excess skin in selected patients, usually after major weight loss.

  10. 10

    Injectables, laser and skin treatments

Non-surgical options with limited downtime, performed by trained clinicians.

Why this pathway

Why a specialist review matters

  • 01

A proper assessment checks that a procedure is safe and suitable for you, including your health, medications and expectations.

  • 02

A surgeon can explain what is realistic, what the alternatives are and what the procedure cannot change.

  • 03

A written plan helps you compare options, risks, recovery time, costs and aftercare, and decide whether travelling for treatment makes sense.

Timing

When to see a specialist

  1. 01

Book an appointment if you are considering a cosmetic procedure and want to understand your options, risks and recovery.

  2. 02

Seek urgent medical care after surgery for increasing pain, spreading redness, discharge, fever, bleeding, a wound opening, or swelling that is getting worse. Contact your treating clinic straight away.

  3. 03

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, a painful swollen leg, fainting or severe allergic reaction. Do not wait for an online enquiry.

After the theatre

Recovery and aftercare

  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions on medicines, wound care, compression garments, activity limits and follow-up visits.
  • Report fever, increasing pain, bleeding, wound problems, unusual swelling or breathlessness promptly.
  • Avoid smoking and nicotine before and after surgery, since they slow healing and raise the risk of complications.
  • Allow enough recovery time before flying. Ask your surgeon when it is safe to travel and how to reduce clot risk, especially after body or breast procedures.
  • Expect swelling and bruising to settle gradually; final results can take months to appear.
  • Arrange follow-up with a doctor at home, and ask for your operative notes and any implant details to keep.

Making decisions about cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery is usually elective, so you can take your time. Share your complete history, ask for a written plan with realistic expectations and risks, and confirm the surgeon’s qualifications and the clinic’s accreditation before you decide to travel. A good consultation includes honest discussion of limits and alternatives.

What to ask before surgery.

  • Am I a suitable candidate, and what are the alternatives, including not having the procedure?
  • What are the realistic results, and what are the limits for my case?
  • What are the risks specific to me, and how are complications managed?
  • What are the surgeon’s qualifications, and how often do they perform this procedure?
  • What is included in the written estimate, and what is not?
  • What follow-up and revision care is provided, and what happens if I need help after I return home?
  • How long must I stay before flying home?

Questions

Before you pack

Broader India travel questions live on Medical, Wellness, and Ayurveda.

Which procedure is right for me?

It depends on your goals, anatomy, health and expectations. A surgeon can explain what is realistic, what the alternatives are and, where relevant, advise against a procedure that is not suitable.

How much does cosmetic surgery cost in India?

Costs vary by procedure, surgical complexity, surgeon, clinic, anaesthesia, implants and aftercare. Ask for an itemised written estimate and confirm what is and is not included; this page does not promise a fixed price.

Are results permanent?

It depends on the procedure. Ageing, weight change and pregnancy continue after surgery, and some results fade or need revision. Your surgeon can explain how long to expect results to last in your case. Outcomes vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Who is not a suitable candidate?

Suitability depends on your health, medications, smoking status, bleeding or healing problems and expectations. Some procedures, such as liposuction, are not suitable as a weight-loss method. A surgeon must assess you.

What are the risks?

All surgery carries risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry, unsatisfactory appearance, anaesthesia complications and blood clots. Your surgeon should explain the risks specific to your procedure and your health before you decide.

How do I check a surgeon’s qualifications?

Ask for the surgeon’s name, registration and training in plastic or cosmetic surgery, and how often they perform the specific procedure. Check the clinic’s accreditation and ask who will provide anaesthesia and what happens in an emergency.

When can I fly home after surgery?

Timing depends on the procedure and your recovery. Flying too soon after some procedures, especially body or breast surgery, can raise the risk of complications such as blood clots. Ask your surgeon for specific advice.

Can I combine several procedures in one trip?

Sometimes, but longer or combined surgery increases risk, and some combinations are not advised. Your surgeon will advise on what is safe and may recommend staging procedures.

What if I am unhappy with the result or have a complication?

Ask the clinic in advance what follow-up, revision and complication care it provides, who pays for what, and how you would be treated if a problem appears after you return home. Do not rely on verbal promises.

Can I send my photos and history for an opinion before travelling?

Yes. You can share photos, history and any previous records for review, and the team will advise on whether a procedure may be suitable. A final decision is made after an in-person examination.

What follow-up care will I need back in the US?

You may need wound checks, medicines and review with a local doctor. Ask for an operative summary, implant details, if any, and a clear handover plan. Some US clinicians are reluctant to manage complications from treatment abroad, so confirm this in advance.

Does insurance cover cosmetic surgery abroad?

Cosmetic procedures are usually not covered by insurance, and complication care at home may also not be covered. Check with your insurer before travelling; MedMax cannot guarantee reimbursement.
