Overview

Fertility care, explained

ertility care covers the assessment and treatment of difficulty conceiving, for women, men or both partners. Care can range from tests, medicines and lifestyle changes to treatments such as IUI and IVF, and the right option depends on your age, medical history, test results and goals. Outcomes vary between patients, and no clinic can guarantee a pregnancy. MedMax helps you organise your records for specialist review. It does not recommend a treatment.

Pathways

Types of fertility care

The right option depends on the cause of the difficulty, your age, how long you have been trying and your overall health

  • 01

    Fertility assessment

Tests and consultation to look for causes in one or both partners, such as ovulation, tubes, uterus and sperm.

  • 02

    Ovulation induction

Medicines that help the ovaries release eggs, often combined with timed intercourse or IUI.

  • 03

    Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Prepared sperm is placed in the uterus around ovulation, for selected patients.

  • 04

    In vitro fertilisation (IVF)

Eggs are collected, fertilised in the laboratory and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus.

  • 05

    ICSI

A single sperm is injected into an egg during IVF, commonly used for male-factor infertility.

  • 06

    Fertility preservation

Options such as egg or embryo freezing for patients who wish to delay pregnancy or face treatment that may affect fertility.

  • 07

    Male fertility care

Evaluation and treatment of low sperm count, poor sperm quality or blockages, including surgical sperm retrieval in selected cases.

Treatments

Common fertility investigations and treatments

A fertility specialist should explain the purpose, benefits, risks and alternatives of each step, including the chance of success for your age and situation.

  1. 01

    Ovarian reserve tests

Blood tests and ultrasound to estimate the number of eggs remaining, such as AMH and antral follicle count.

  2. 02

    Semen analysis

A laboratory test of sperm count, movement and shape

  3. 03

    Tubal and uterine assessment

Scans or dye tests to check that the fallopian tubes and uterus are healthy.

  4. 04

    Hysteroscopy or laparoscopy

Keyhole procedures to examine and, where needed, treat problems in the uterus or pelvis.

  5. 05

    Ovarian stimulation

Injectable or oral medicines to help several eggs mature, with scans and blood tests to monitor response.

  6. 06

    Egg retrieval

A short procedure, usually under sedation, to collect eggs from the ovaries.

  7. 07

    Fertilisation and embryo culture

Eggs and sperm are combined in the laboratory, and embryos are grown for several days.

  8. 08

    Embryo transfer

One or more embryos are placed in the uterus, either fresh or after freezing.

  9. 09

    Embryo or egg freezing

Storage of eggs or embryos for use in a later cycle.

  10. 10

    Pregnancy testing and early scans

Blood tests and ultrasound after transfer to check for pregnancy.

  2. 02

Clarify proposed treatment plans and request an itemised written estimate from the clinic.

  3. 03

Help you plan travel, stay and coordination with your doctor at home, including monitoring and follow-up.

Causes

Common causes of fertility problems

  1. 01

Age-related decline in egg quantity and quality

  2. 02

    Ovulation disorders such as PCOS

  3. 03

Blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis or fibroids

  4. 04

Low sperm count, poor sperm movement or other male-factor causes

  5. 05

Hormonal conditions, genetics, lifestyle factors and, in some couples, no cause found

Treated

Concerns a fertility specialist can assess

  • Not conceiving after 12 months of trying, or 6 months if the woman is 35 or older
  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Known PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids or blocked tubes
  • Low sperm count or an abnormal semen analysis
  • Repeated miscarriages
  • A wish to freeze eggs or embryos for the future

Procedures

Treatment options

  • Fertility tests for both partners
  • Medicines, lifestyle changes and timed intercourse
  • IUI or IVF with or without ICSI
  • Fertility preservation and surgical treatment of underlying conditions

Why this pathway

Why a specialist review matters

  • 01

Fertility tests can identify the likely cause, so treatment is matched to your situation rather than started by default.

  • 02

Age matters for fertility, so timely assessment can help you understand your options and plan realistic timelines.

  • 03

A written plan helps you compare expected cycles, medicines, costs, time away from home and what happens if the first cycle is unsuccessful.

Timing

When to see a fertility specialist

  1. 01

Book an appointment if you have not conceived after 12 months of trying (6 months if the woman is 35 or older), sooner if you are over 40 or have known conditions or irregular periods.

  2. 02

Seek urgent medical care after egg retrieval or treatment for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, rapid weight gain, marked swelling or difficulty passing urine. Contact your treating clinic straight away.

  3. 03

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting or severe sudden abdominal pain. Do not wait for an online enquiry.

After the theatre

Recovery and aftercare

  • Follow your clinic’s instructions on medicines, injections, scans and follow-up visits.
  • Report severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, bloating or breathlessness promptly, as these can signal complications.
  • Ask your clinic what activity, travel and flying restrictions apply after egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
  • Plan for a pregnancy test and early scans, and arrange early antenatal care with your doctor at home if pregnancy is confirmed.
  • Look after your emotional wellbeing; ask about counselling and support, as fertility treatment can be demanding.
  • Ask for a full cycle summary, including medicines, embryo details and any frozen embryos, to share with your doctor at home.

Making decisions about fertility care

Fertility treatment is a significant emotional, physical and financial commitment, and a careful review of your records can help you choose a plan with more confidence. Share your complete history, ask for a written plan with realistic expectations, and confirm the clinic’s accreditation, embryology lab and team before you decide to travel.

What to ask before treatment

  • What is the likely cause, and which treatment do you recommend for my situation?
  • What are the realistic chances for my age group, and how does the clinic measure them?
  • What is included in the written estimate, and what is not (medicines, ICSI, freezing, storage)?
  • How many cycles might I need, and what is the plan if the first one does not work?
  • Which steps must be done in person, and which can be done near home?
  • What are the risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation and multiple pregnancy?
  • How will my care be handed over to my doctor at home?

Questions

Before you pack

Broader India travel questions live on Medical, Wellness, and Ayurveda.

Which fertility treatment do I need?

It depends on tests for both partners, your age, your history and how long you have been trying. A fertility specialist can explain the likely cause and compare suitable options, including less intensive ones.

How much does IVF cost in India?

Costs vary by clinic, medicines, whether ICSI, embryo freezing or other add-ons are needed, and how many cycles are required. Ask for an itemised written estimate and confirm what is and is not included; this page does not promise a fixed price.

What are the chances of success?

Success depends mainly on age, egg and sperm quality, the cause of infertility and the treatment used. No clinic can guarantee a pregnancy or live birth. Ask the clinic for results relevant to your age group and how they are measured.

How many cycles will I need?

This varies. Some patients conceive in the first cycle, while others need several or may not conceive. Your specialist can discuss realistic expectations and plan for the possibility of more than one cycle.

How long would I need to stay in India?

It depends on the treatment and protocol. Some or all monitoring may be done near home, with a shorter stay for egg retrieval and embryo transfer. Ask the clinic to explain the timeline and which steps must be done in person.

Can I start monitoring at home and travel later?

Often yes, if your local clinic is willing to coordinate. Ask the clinic in writing how remote monitoring, medicines and scans would be arranged.

Is IVF painful, and what are the risks?

Injections and egg retrieval cause some discomfort, and egg retrieval is usually done under sedation. Risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple pregnancy, infection and bleeding. Your team will explain these for your case.

Can I choose the sex of my baby?

No. Sex selection is illegal in India, and clinics cannot offer it. Ask the clinic about any genetic testing it offers and what the law permits.

What about donor eggs, donor sperm or surrogacy?

Rules in India are strict and have changed in recent years, particularly for international patients. Ask the clinic what is legally permitted for your situation before you plan. This page does not offer legal advice. [confirm current legal position with counsel before publishing any donor or surrogacy content]

Can I send my reports for an opinion before travelling?

Yes. You can share your test results, scans and treatment history for review, and the team will advise on any further tests needed.

What follow-up care will I need back in the US?

You will need pregnancy testing, early scans and antenatal care with a local provider, and possibly continued medicines. Ask the clinic for a cycle summary, embryo records and a clear handover plan for your home clinician.

Does insurance cover treatment abroad?

Coverage varies by plan, and many US plans cover fertility treatment only in part. Check with your insurer before travelling; MedMax cannot guarantee reimbursement.
