Overview

What is orthopaedic care in India?

Joint replacement and spine lists in India run at a scale that shortens waits and makes implant costs readable. We match you to a centre by the joint or level involved, write the implant line, and plan physiotherapy — including a Recovery stay if you should not fly on day five.

Surgical theatre

Pathways

Types of orthopaedic care

  • 01

    Joint replacement

Primary and revision knee and hip replacements, including bilateral plans when both sides are indicated.

  • 02

    Spine

Decompression, fusion, and deformity work matched to surgeons who do this list weekly.

  • 03

    Sports & trauma

Ligament reconstruction, meniscus, shoulder, and delayed trauma that still needs a planned theatre.

  • 04

    Deformity & paediatric

Limb alignment and selected paediatric orthopaedic programmes.

Treatments

Common orthopaedic treatments

  1. 01

    Total knee replacement

Primary TKR with implant brand on the quote and a physio plan from day one.

  2. 02

    Hip replacement

THA for arthritis or selected fracture work, including anterior approaches where listed.

  3. 03

    Spine fusion / decompression

Level-specific plans. Hardware is named; “spine package” is not a substitute for a level.

  4. 04

    ACL and sports repair

Ligament and cartilage work for patients who can travel on a planned list, not an emergency.

Care desk

How MedMax runs a ortho case

You do not need a finished hospital shortlist to start. Share what you have — letters, scans, or a short note — and a care manager maps the next clinical step for orthopaedics before any report leaves MedMax.

  1. 01

Same-day acknowledgement, specialist view targeted within two business days

  2. 02

Hospital shortlist by volume and accreditation for this pathway — not a brochure directory

  3. 03

Written quote with theatre, implants or drugs, ICU nights, and attendant stay listed

  4. 04

Visa letter, pickup, and Recovery nights only after you approve a match

Causes

Possible causes

  1. 01

End-stage knee or hip arthritis that limits walking

  2. 02

Disc herniation, stenosis, or deformity with nerve signs

  3. 03

A sports tear that has not recovered with physio

  4. 04

A failed or worn implant that needs revision

  5. 05

Wait times at home measured in many months

Treated

Conditions treated

  • Osteoarthritis of knee or hip
  • Lumbar and cervical spine disease
  • Ligament and meniscus injury
  • Shoulder cuff and instability
  • Selected paediatric deformity
  • Revision of a painful implant

Procedures

Common procedures

  • Total knee replacement
  • Total hip replacement
  • Spine decompression / fusion
  • ACL reconstruction
  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Revision joint replacement

Why this pathway

Why is orthopaedic treatment needed?

  • 01

Pain that stops sleep and stairs will not reverse with another year of waiting.

  • 02

Implant brand and cement type change the bill — they should be written, not implied.

  • 03

Physio in the first fortnight decides how the joint behaves on the flight home.

  • 04

Revision work belongs at a centre that does revisions, not a general list.

Timing

When should you see a specialist?

  1. 01

X-ray or MRI already shows bone-on-bone or a clear disc/nerve conflict

  2. 02

Walking distance, stairs, or sleep have collapsed despite physio

  3. 03

Numbness, weakness, or bladder change with a spine problem — this may be urgent at home first

  4. 04

A surgeon at home has quoted a wait you cannot live with

  5. 05

You want the implant named before you pay a deposit

After the theatre

Precautions & aftercare

  • Early walking and a written physio sheet are part of the stay, not an extra brochure.
  • Long-haul flights after a new joint often need a Recovery week and clot prevention as advised.
  • Wound checks and staple removal are planned before you leave or with a local clinician we brief.
  • Do not skip the post-op radiograph if the surgeon asked for one before flying.

Questions

Before you pack

Broader India travel questions live on Medical, Wellness, and Ayurveda.

Which implant will I get?

The quote names the implant or marks it as a confirmed extra. We do not leave “standard implant” undefined.

What does orthopaedic surgery cost in India?

The figure on this page is an indicative starting band, not a brochure package. After a specialist reads your reports we write a quote with theatre, implant or consumables, ICU and ward nights, and attendant stay listed separately. Estimates are marked as estimates.

How soon can we travel?

Most planned cases list a theatre window in weeks, not months — once reports are complete and you have approved a hospital. Visa timing depends on your passport and mission; we issue the invitation after you accept a quote.

Will the hospital see my reports before I say yes?

No. Files stay with MedMax until you approve a match. You can stop after a second opinion.

Can a family member stay with me?

Yes. Attendant beds and nearby stay are listed on the quote. After discharge we can arrange a Recovery stay if you need more days before the flight home.

Is this page medical advice?

This page is guidance for families planning care in India. Diagnosis and treatment decisions remain with your clinicians.
